Clients We’re Not the Right Fit For

We’ve been doing this long enough to know that not every client is a good fit for how we work. That’s not a judgment on them or us, it’s just reality. We’d rather be honest about it upfront than take someone’s money knowing the partnership probably won’t work out.

Here are the situations where we’re typically not the right agency partner.

If Perfection Matters More Than Progress

Some things do need to be perfect. You don’t want an email going out with a broken link or a typo in your product pricing. We get that.

But if you’re putting an organic social media post through multiple rounds of revisions to decide whether the word should be “big,” “large,” “huge,” or “enormous,” you’ll get slow results, and we’ll get frustrated if we’re unable to put our effort toward impactful work. Unnecessary scrutiny on low-stakes work destroys ROI. These clients are paying for rounds of edits that don’t move the needle.

We work best with clients who understand the difference between work that needs to be perfect and work that just needs to be good.

If You Struggle to Make Decisions

Marketing moves fast, and momentum matters. If decision-making is slow or gets stuck in endless discussions, progress grinds to a halt. You end up paying us every month but not seeing the impact because we’re waiting on approvals or clarity to move forward.

We prefer to work with clients who can make decisions in a reasonable timeframe. That doesn’t mean being reckless; it means being able to evaluate options, make a call, and move on. If that’s difficult in your organization, we’re probably not the right fit.

If You’re Not Willing to Take Calculated Risks

Moving the needle requires testing things that might not work. We’re not talking about reckless moves. We’re talking about calculated risks based on data and experience. Running a new campaign format. Testing a different message. Trying a channel you haven’t used before.

If every recommendation gets met with “let’s think about it” or “we’re not comfortable with that,” it’s hard to make progress. You end up playing it safe and getting safe results.

We need clients who are willing to try things, fail small, learn fast, and adjust. If that makes you uncomfortable, we may not be the right partner.

If You Approve Work at Milestones and Then Want to Rework Everything at the End

This one is frustrating for everyone involved.

We build review and approval points into projects for a reason; so you can give feedback when it’s still easy to adjust the course. If you approve concepts, designs, and functionality at each stage, and then get to the end and say, “actually, let’s start over,” it’s a problem.

It wastes time, money, and makes it nearly impossible to deliver results because so much work gets thrown away. If you’re not ready to commit to decisions at milestones, it’s better to wait until you are before starting a project.

If You Want to Control the Process

We’re not rigid, but we have processes that work. They’re proven across dozens of clients and they’re a big part of why we get results.

If you want to dictate exactly how we do our work, it breaks the system. We can adapt to your business needs, but we can’t completely rebuild our processes for one client.

If you need that level of control, we advise hiring a contractor or building an internal team where you can set all the rules.

If It’s a Struggle To Trust

This one is simple. If you hire us, you have to trust us.

That doesn’t mean you should blindly agree with everything we say. It doesn’t mean you can’t push back or ask questions. But it does mean that when we make a recommendation based on data and experience, you should assume we’re giving you our best advice, not trying to push unnecessary work.

If you’re second-guessing every recommendation, micromanaging every task, or constantly looking over our shoulder, it’s exhausting for both of us. And it usually means the trust isn’t there.

Without trust, the partnership doesn’t work.

But When It Works. It Works.

We’re picky about who we work with because we’ve experienced many great partnerships, some good ones, and others that didn’t work. We’ve found the red threads, and we know that when these dynamics exist, the work suffers, you don’t get the results you’re paying for, and nobody’s happy.

That’s okay. Other agencies and freelancers work differently, and one of them might be perfect for what you need.

But if you’re decisive, willing to take smart risks, trust your partners, and prioritize progress over perfection, those signs point to a good-fit partner that we want to work with.
