Taking the Leap: From Corporate America to Starting a Boutique Marketing Agency

Looking back in life, it’s hard to remember a time before I was intrigued by the world of business. Perhaps it’s because I grew up in a home of entrepreneurial parents, or maybe it’s just innately in my DNA, but I’ve always been inspired by business and by effective leaders. Last summer, after 15 years of experience in building and leading teams for top brands including LEGO Education and Deluxe Corporation, I set out to pursue my dream of becoming an entrepreneur.

The business? Helping other businesses!

I’ll admit, it was a little scary, (ok, maybe a lot scary) taking the plunge from corporate America to business owner, but it has also been extremely exciting and ignites a motivation that is pretty cool! Being a part of the corporate world for 15 years always meant a steady paycheck and consistent benefits – in essence, it meant some level of security and stability. Starting a business means taking risk without guarantee. It means expanding my comfort zone and trusting in something not yet proven.

So why do it? Because it’s something in life I have dreamed of for a long time, and two of my greatest passions inspired me to take the leap: People and marketing.

On the people side of things, I believe I have a talent for building effective teams where people feel valued and motivated to do their best. At LimeLight Marketing we are committed to maintaining a high performing team in a work environment where employees feel motivated, empowered and inspired.

Creating a culture where others can grow and thrive is very rewarding to me – and now I have the opportunity to do this through my own business! It was an easy decision to sign on one of my LEGO Education team members, Jenni Breeze, who brings to the table years of experience in digital and content marketing as well as web and e-commerce expertise. Jenni is not only a great marketer, but a great person who makes me a better leader. I have made sure to brand my new company in a way that will attract high quality employees and retain them.

It made sense to start my business right here in the same community in which my parents’ business was born: Pittsburg, Kansas — the home of many now-thriving companies started by entrepreneurs who made a jump of their own.
